The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources, and the U.S. Geological Survey began a cooperative long-term water-quality monitoring program for Atlanta-area streams in 1996. The program includes an extensive network of real-time streamflow, precipitation and water-quality monitors and hydrologically-based sampling of streamwater for bacteria, organic and inorganic compounds, nutrients, metals, biological and chemical oxygen demand, and sediment.
